Free College Football Picks

9/13/03

We got thumped hard in the opening week of College ball, but came back a bit last weekend. Last weekends results can be found by clicking on our "past picks" links to the left; where you can find our portfolio results as well as links to past picks pages.

B Rated Picks

  • 9/12/03 Update - Cincinnati (+) - Won - Bearcats coming off a bye may win SU on the road, at the least we expect this will be a 1 score decision.  Both teams have vulnerabilities they can exploit offensively, so we expect points to be put up.  Cincy is one of the better teams in CUSA, while WV is a lower echelon squad in the Big East.

  • @Colorado - Lost - Washington State may be uninspired this week off a disappointing loss at Notre Dame. This is Washington's 3rd road trip in a row (1st GOY was across the state at Seattle). Now their playing a squad which is better than last weeks opponent.  The Buffaloes are playing their 2nd homer in a row and have the power to run right up the gut on what might be a tired Cougars team.

  • Middle Tennessee State (+) - Lost - Not convinced Tommy Bowden's Tigers can roll this scrappy Blue Raiders squad - two TDs is 2 too many. MTS will make the short trip into South Carolina believing they can outright win this game - and we won't be surprised if they do.

  • @Connecticut (+) - Lost - Boston College's coach was a former Paterno protégé, which is why he seemed to know the Lions game plan.  BC has the Miami Hurricanes on deck at home. The Huskies have the tools to beat BC and the Eagles might be the one's looking ahead this time.

  • @Arizona State - Lost -Al's Pounder - The young Utah State squad is playing their 3rd roadie in a row - and they did not play as well in their thumping at Nebraska as the final score indicates. The Cornhuskers settled for FGs inside the10 in what easily could have been TDs. ASU does have a road trip to Iowa on deck and may be looking ahead here - but we think the third stringers can still win by 5 TDs against a tired Aggie squad.

2003 NFL Football Picks

9/1403

A Rated Picks:

  • Seattle - Won - Seattle is our pick to win the NFC West this year, predicting 4 inner-division wins. Arizona doesn't have the defense to stop the Seahawks wide open pass offense.  This would be an A+ selection but for Holmgren hosting arch division rival St. Louis on deck, which means he may play it close to the vest in a contest the Seahawks are sure to win.  Last year Seattle split with Arizona - but soundly outperfotmed them in the stat box in both contests. This year the Seahawks have legitimate division title aspirations.  Seattle rookie CB Marcus Trufant will likely be placed on Arizona rookie WR Anquan Boldin - the first of many such pairings.

B Rated Picks:

  • 9/13/03 Update - @Atlanta - Lost Both teams have key division rivalry contests on deck, which usually means a vanilla game plan, which usually means lots of power rushing plays between the tackles.  Atlanta has the tools to exploit the soft Redskins middle. Skins lost both starting DTs from last year and projected FA starting DT Brandon Noble went down late in pre-season on IR.  Look for cagey coach Dan Reeves to take advantage of key Washington vulnerability with power rushing attack. We'll lay the even FG and take the home team to win by a TD.

  • 9/12/03 Update - @St. Louis  - Push - We pointed out LAST YEAR that Warner's synapses function has suffered from his multiple concussions in 2002.  Sad but true he's simply not as decisive as he used to be. He didn't get a concussion last week - he's still suffering from last year!  The Rams are a better team at this point with Bulger at QB - we think the O-line will play better this week - and the 49'ers don't have the explosion off the edge on their pass rush to threaten the deep strike attack of the Rams.  On the other side of the ball San Francisco is not deep enough at the wideout position to take advantage of the Rams thin secondary.

  • @ Minnesota - Won - Poor Chicago.  Might be a let down situation, on the other hand this is a division match-up and if the potent Vikings win they're in the catbird seat for the NFC North division title.

  • UNDER - NY Giants vs Dallas - Monday Night - Giants starting 3 new offensive lineman. We expect there will be some miscues here resulting in loss of downs and or field position.  Dallas has solid secondary and linebackers; however their potency on offense is questionable.  We call for this game to go under the 37 in a game we expect will be played close to the vest.
