2003 College Football Picks

8/28/03

A Rated Picks:

  • @Auburn - Lost - The Tigers are loaded this year. They return 16 starters from a team that could have beat USC on the road last year.  Cadillac Williams was able to move the ball on the ground last time they met - and we think he'll be able to this time.  Tigers are healthy and have been looking forward to this re-match.   On the other hand not only is USC QB Carson Palmer out of the picture - the Trojans offensive line is banged up (C Norm Katnik & LT Jacob Rogers).  The starting TE & FBs from last years squad are both out for this road opener - meaning the USC inexperienced starting QB (Leinert) will be playing behind a young and untested group of blockers, against a home team hungry for revenge.  We don't see the Trojans having the success they enjoyed last year going over the top  in this spot.  Auburn by 10.

B Rated Picks

  • Duke (+)  - Lost - We like Virginia as a "play on" team this year, trouble is so does the rest of the nation - which drives up the cost way past where it should be in this spot. Duke is a veteran team that matches up well to the Cavaliers.  Pro-style offense Cav's lost their top receiver to injury for the season in practice this week, which will hurt their over the top pass attack.

  • Idaho (+) - Won - Vandals have a potent passing offense and should be able to put up some points here against a Cougar team that lost their top CB (Marcus Trufant) to the NFL draft.  WSU will be able to put up points on Idaho - but by 4 TDs?  We like the Vandals to put up some points of their own.

  • Rice (+)  - Lost - We played Houston several times last year - this season they're breaking in a new HC with new coordinators on both sides of the ball and new schemes.  We like the Owls to roll on the ground and have a good shot to pull the outright upset.

  • @Mississippi St (+)  - Lost - Kurt's Flip Pick  We like this one on the ML. Dawgs can win this one straight up at home.  Powerful trends favor the Ducks - which gives us good line value on the ML with the home dog in revenge mode.  Oregon missing 3 of their top 5 defensive players from last year - and Ducks traveling to the deep south about a month too early.

  • Maryland - Lost  (Thursday the 28th)  The Terrapins like to run the ball, and so do the Northern Illinois Huskies. Trouble for the Huskies is the Terrapins are bigger, faster, and stronger on both sides of the ball in the trenches.  The Terrapins O-line outweighs the opposing line by almost 40 lbs per man!  In addition Maryland operates a 3-4 defensive set which is specifically designed to stop the run.  In recent years we have liked the Huskies as double digit dogs against the bigger schools - but not here.  Terrapins keep it on the ground and roll (literally) over the smaller stop unit to a double digit victory.

Also Likes:  Oklahoma St (+),  Washington (+),  North Texas (+),  North Carolina (+),  So. Mississippi (+),  Rutgers,  Auburn,  Texas A&M

2003 NFL Football Picks

9/7/03

B Rated Picks:

  • @ NY Giants vs St. Louis  - Giants have a deep fleet of receivers that the Rams will have a hard time matching up against.  Pace is holding out, even if he reports before the game he will not be in sync. And, Strahan always has good games against the Rams.... With TE Shockey questionable because of a broken rib, we're getting nice value at less than a FG.

  • New England (+) vs Buffalo - Kurt's Flip Pick, Belichick has the Bills (and Bledsoe's) number. Why, we're not sure.  But when Bledsoe plays against his former team it looks like the Pat's secondary knows what he's going to do before the receivers do. We like New England on the ML to pull the upset in this spot.

Also Likes:  Seattle, Chicago
