Saturday Morning Draft Weekend Update Scheduled.... We decided to leave our late draft version up - The Jets targeted player has been widely published - so we'll discuss who the Bears are probably targeting....
4/26/03 draft day update: The Jets move really shook things up - it was sweet - and the price was the proverbial win/win for both teams. Which given the circumstances of who was ahead and behind them - made the cost of trading up to leapfrog them very pricey. We like the Bears to grab the best available DT with their 13 pick, which could be William Joseph- or Marcus Trufant if he's still available - if they go CB first they'll address DT with the 22nd pick - and target Chris Simms with their 2nd round choice.. A very nice trade for both teams. <end update> __________________________________________________________________
Allen and I had a harder time reaching a decisions on our mock draft than we typically do determining a play that we'd put money on.... I have new found respect for the people who do this for a living. To do it right takes a significant amount of time - we found that a nip of Jim Beam will greatly reduce the stress of pulling the trigger on a selection. And it's an ongoing process - one trade can mangle your draft...for instance St Louis has acquired Kyle Turley from the Saints (for a 2nd round pick), which means it's unlikely they'll be taking Kwame Harris.... time for another damn revision....
We assigned each team a primary position need on a scale of 1-10. For example we gave Cincinnati a QB need ranking of 8.5, and Detroit a WR need ranking of 9 (CB need ranking of 8), Houston a need ranking of 9 at RB, and so forth. We then used player scouting report grades, team drafting styles, & personal observations of players we observed during the regular NCAA season - to project our mock draft. We subtracted the need ranking from the player ranking. From this we determined that Minnesota, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, & Cincinnati were the most likely teams to trade down (in that order). The most probable teams that could trade up our New Orleans, New England & the Jets, however these squads can get quality players that fill a need by standing pat. The teams that will most likely need to trade up to get their man are Tennessee and Indianapolis. The teams sitting in the catbird seats are Seattle & Minnesota; They should be playoff teams this year and should get contributing talent with their picks. The team we have the most difficult time projecting a pick for - Buffalo. This team has made excellent FA additions - and should be able to draft the best available athlete. Here is a nice little article on drafting strategies from the Great Blue North Draft Report.
Update: With the Saints acquiring safety Tebucky Jones from the Pats for a 2nd rounder - they have become strong candidates to trade up - look for them to try and acquire one of the blue chip CB's - either Terrance Newman or Marcus Trufant, or a pass rushing DE. A trade with Minnesota is very workable.... Prediction - McGahee will not be drafted in round one, look for him to go in round two - guys just don't fully recover from torn ACL's in one year - end of report. The highest we have him going is he might go to Houston with their pick at the top of the 2nd round. Biggest Surprise of our mock work-up... we don't have Larry Johnson going in the first round, although we think he's the guy we mention most often in our "possible's" picks. This guy will be a player in the NFL.... Another RB who we think will could have an impact with the right team is Onterrio Smith out of Oregon.
Update 4/23/03 We think there will be 3 QB's taken in the first 10 picks. If Leftwich or Boller is still available when Baltimore comes up - we don't see them passing on a potential franchise QB. Newman may have surpassed Suggs in draft grading.... We don't see Houston taking Andre Johnson with the third pick, although we like Andre's potential very very much, the pick just doesn't mesh with what Houston is trying to put together long term - we still think the Texans will trade down. Another team that is bending over backwards to trade down is the Vikings... perhaps because of last years troubles signing their 1st round pick... someone should accommodate them.
Most under-rated consensus 1st round pick: Troy Polamalu: This guy's gonna be a playmaker. Of course if he ends up in Cincinnati all bets are off.
Most over-rated consensus 1st round pick: Kelly Washington: Somebody's going to bite on him because of his extraordinary athleticism, speed, and potential. But - fused vertebrae's in his neck - I don't care how good his workouts are... I wouldn't take him in the first round... It just takes a couple years to learn the nuances of this position... and Washington is already a couple years older than the majority of this draft class.
Update 4/24/03 Lots of discussion and theories regarding McGahee and his recent "excellent" workout bouncing him back into the 1st round - we still don't think he'll go that high... But - if he did the most likely teams to take a flyer on him would be the Eagles or the Raiders - We still think Larry Johnson goes before McGahee - and that LJ goes in round 1... somewhere.
Palmer has already signed with Cincinnati? Looks like another sub .500 year for the Bengals - Why tip your hand so soon?
Keep in mind that NFL Drafting strategy and gamesmanship is as intricate as game planning during the playoffs - there are a lot of rumors floating out there specifically designed to keep a potential adversary from trading up and grabbing the player a team covets. Players football instincts haven't suddenly improved in the past week. At this time of year game film can be more important than recent workouts - which are often professionally enhanced track meets. Keep an eye on a team free agent signings/losses - they can have significant impact on a team's drafting strategy.

| Needs | Team |
Selection |
Comments |
|
| 1 |
QB DT OLB |
Cincinnati |
Carson Palmer QB |
Carson will go #1. We're just not exactly sure by whom. In Cincy he'll have a chance to hold a clipboard for the first half of the season. Chicago, Arizona & Dallas is our best bet to swap places with Cincinnati, in any case the guy who we think will go number uno is Carson Palmer.
If we were running the show we'd try and trade down a few spots and acquire extra selections in the 1st round; Then grab a developmental QB such as Ragone or Simms at the top of the 2nd round. If history repeats itself - nothing would screw up Carson's career quicker than being drafted by the Bengal's and asked to start right away. |
| 2 |
WR CB |
Detroit |
Charles Rodgers WR |
Could be the best talent in the draft. Has the potential to develop into a Pro's pro. Gives Harrington an immediate home run target. Rodgers going to Detroit is the surest pick in the draft.... |
| 3 |
RB OT WR |
Houston | Jordan Gross LT | RB is Houston's greatest need. And we think Larry Johnson is the next Eddie George. The Texans also need a tackle. They could easily opt for a Jordan Gross here and pick up a 2nd tier runner in the 2nd round (such as Onterrio Smith or perhaps McGahee). LJ doesn't have the draft grade to go #3 overall - but we think he's the guy who could help Houston the most this year - and he probably won't be around when their numbers called in the 2nd round.... So we think the Texans will try and trade down to pick up one of the blue chip tackles (Gross & Harris) or Steinbach, and still get the guy they really need - Larry Johnson. However if they stay put...we think they'll take Gross. |
| 4 |
QB DL OLB |
Chicago |
Terrell Suggs DE |
Premier DE's are hard to come by, and
irregardless of his recent 40 time Sugg's is the real deal. We don't
think newly acquired Kordell Stewart is the long term answer at QB, so
the Bears could easily opt for Byron Leftwich if they stay in this spot.
Otherwise it makes sense to take Suggs now and a developmental QB in the 2nd round.
However there are political consideration power plays that could come
into play with this pick. They could draft for immediate help, or draft
for the future.... Note - if the Bears do take a QB here, such as Leftwich (and we're not saying they don't need one - cause Stewart's not the answer), Dick Jauron's day's in windy city are numbered.... |
| 5 |
DE CB RB QB |
Dallas | Terrance Newman CB |
Parcell's may wish to trade down for extra picks - he has a history
of doing so. Suggs doesn't
slip past the 5 spot if Chicago passes on him. Newman is a nice pick-up
here and would give Dallas a rock solid secondary.
Dallas may opt to trade down to fulfill multiple needs - like Houston they could be looking at picking up an extra 1st round pick - to get Larry Johnson later in the draft - and one of the highly rated DT's. |
| 6 |
QB WR DE |
Arizona | Byron Leftwich QB | If any team should trade down it's the hapless Cardinals. They have multiple needs. QB Leftwich is the best value. They also have extreme needs at WR and DE. It won't surprise us if they opt for a blue chip WR such as Andre Johnson, and get their QB of the future in the 2nd round. |
| 7 |
DL DB |
Minnesota | Jimmy Kennedy DT | Vikings won't pass on the premier DT on the board. Kennedy is the real deal. Vikings should get many offers to trade this pick, and they're in a nice position to trade down and still pick up a two gap DT AND a starting caliber DB. |
| 8 |
DE WR |
Jacksonville | Andre Johnson WR | AJ is a potential pro-bowler... and fills a need. Johnson is one of the best athletes on the board... this guy has David Boston written all over him. |
| 9 |
QB OT |
Carolina | Kyle Boller QB | Boller fits the need meets value quotient. Fox will let him sit a year behind Peete to learn the offense. We can also see them taking one of the blue chip DT's here, such as Robertson - tough choice for HC Fox - get someone who helps now (job security), or later... |
| 10 |
WR QB OT |
Baltimore | Kwame Harris OT | Value meets need, though Ravens could opt for a defensive tackle such as DeWayne Robertson or Jonathan Sullivan. If Carolina passes on Boller the Ravens will strongly consider him. |
|
11 |
DT ILB DT |
Seattle | DeWayne Robertson DT | Two gap lane stuffer that can help immediately. Everybody was able to run on the Seahawks last year.... DT is a primary need - and Seattle should be able to get a good one at this spot. If not Robertson it will be Kennedy. |
|
12 |
OLB DT |
St Louis | Marcus Trufant | If the Rams are unable to sign Orlando Pace they could opt for an OL here. Otherwise the need meets value pick is Marcus Trufant. |
| 13 |
DT WR |
* NY Jets | William Joseph DT | Jets
play against the leagues premier RB twice a season, they need a lane
stuffer and Joseph fills the bill.
The Jets also need help at guard - but we think they can get a good one, such as Montrae Holland, in the 2nd round. |
| 14 |
DT WR OT |
New England | Kevin Williams DT | Pats
are in the same situation as the Jets. They want a lane stuffer to help check
Ricky Williams.
We think the Patriots are a likely team to package some picks and move up - targeting Terrell Suggs. If they stay put, a playmaking DT is the first priority. |
| 15 |
S DT OLB |
San Diego | John Sullivan DT | Chargers could go with a CB, or Steinbach if he's available... but we think they'll stuff the middle. Sullivan fits their scheme. They could also opt for an OLB such as Boss Bailey |
| 16 |
DE WR LB |
Kansas City | Boss Bailey OLB | Need meets value... Chiefs are desperate for help at DE - but they're hoping Vonnie Holiday fills that need.. They might opt for a CB here as well. But Bailey is an impact playmaker that can help the defense right away |
| 17 |
OT OLB DB |
New Orleans | George Foster OT | Foster is solid value pick at this location. After trading Kyle Turley this one's a now brainer - the Saints will take the best available tackle with one of their 1st round picks. |
| 18 | New Orleans | Troy Polamalu S | Athletic playmaker helps the secondary from day one. They could also go for a CB such as Woolfolk.... | |
| 19 | * New England | Kelly Washington WR | Gives Patten a true complimentary bookend receiving threat. The Patriots have the picks and the depth to take a flyer on Washington. | |
| 20 |
DE CB |
Denver | Jerome McDougle DE | Bronco's need help in the secondary and CB might get a look here... But we think they'll take the best available DE |
| 21 |
CB OLB G |
Cleveland | Eric Steinbach OT/G | The Browns are in need of a tackle, and Eric Steinbach is great value here. If Foster or Harris is still available they will opt to go in that direction and move Ross Verba back to guard. |
| 22 | NYJ | Taylor Jacobs WR | Gives Pennington an athletic playmaker at receiver... We think they'll go for their highest rated WR with this selection. But if Steinbach gets past Cleveland, it would be hard for NY to pass on him. | |
| 23 |
DL WR OT |
* Buffalo | Bryant Johnson WR | We
think last years rookie WR Josh Reed is the real deal (to replace
Peerless Price), but drafting a WR promotes competition, depth, and covers
their ass in case Reed falls flat. Johnson is a senior with a bit of
speed to him who has good hands - he should be able to help immediately.
They could easily opt for a DE such as Haynes, or at DT... in fact now that I think about it.... |
| 24 |
DB OLB DL |
Indianapolis | Andre Woolfolk CB | Colt's
desperate for playmaker in the secondary. If LB Bailey slips this far we don't think they'd pass
on him in this spot. Another guy they would look at (if he slips) is Polamalu,
Mike Doss, or K-States LB Pierce.
Woolfolk is getting a bad rap as a pure cover corner recently - but we think he'd work with Dungy's coaching in his cover two scheme. |
| 25 |
DT ILB |
NYG | EJ Henderson ILB | Athletic playmaker at ILB - need meets value. Henderson is a potential playmaker - and incumbent ILB, Barrow is become ordinary. However the Giants could easily take a DT here such as Kenny Peterson. In any case - we expect the Giants to shore up their run defense with this pick. |
| 26 |
DT WR |
San Francisco | Kenny Peterson DT | Niners
looking for a 2 gapper to play in their system, if Peterson's available
he fills the bill - Another guy they might look at is DT Ty Warren...
The Niners love to throw, the Niners might be thin at WR next year and this draft is deep in receivers... if one of the top guys slip they may opt to go that route with their 1st pick. But we think they'll go DT first... and look for a developmental WR prospect such as Tyrone Calico in the 2nd. |
| 27 |
DB TE |
Pittsburgh | Mike Doss S | Athletic playmaker could be the best player in Steeler's secondary by the middle of the season. We think the guy the Steelers would really like is Polamalu - but we have him going to the Saints.... |
| 28 |
WR CB TE |
Tennessee | Jason Witten TE | Gives
McNair a playmaking TE over the middle to replace the departed Frank
Wychek. Witten has the tools to help immediately and grades out higher than the WR's that might be available
at this point, However the Titans could opt for a WR such as Bryant
Washington.
If they are unable to re-sign over-rated C Gennaro DiNapoli - look for them to select Jeff Faine over Witten. |
| 29 |
DL LB QB |
Green Bay | Michael Haynes DE | Packers
need help on the defensive front seven - they need playmakers. If OLB Bailey slips they may go that route in this spot. Another
consideration is QB Boller if he's around, but the Packers are better known for
developing late round gems at the QB position.
They're also desperate for help on the O-line... if one of the top 3 OL slips he won't get past the pack. |
| 30 |
DE LB |
Philadelphia | Chris Kelsay DE | Tough to overcome loss of Hugh Douglas - Kelsay can provide help in the rotation from day one. Philly has a tough Dee... but they've lost some quality players from the defense in the past two years - we think they'll use this pick on one of the front 7 positions on the defensive side of the ball. EJ Henderson would be given consideration if he slips. |
| 31 |
DE WR OLB |
Oakland | Jeff Faine C | Hard
to believe Robbins has a future in Oakland - Highly rated Faine can compete with
back-up center Treu for starting job. Raiders in enviable position to take best available player
& draft for future needs.... But Faine was a reliable team leader at
Notre Dame - and it looks like the Raiders need one at Center.
Prediction: Raiders will attempt a trade involving Robbins if Faine is available at this spot. |
| 32 | Oakland | Tyler Brayton DE | Larry Johnson
could get a long
look here as well... If one of the top receivers slips they could go
that way. However Oakland
will have two of their starting DL up for free agency next year and
another, Trace Armstrong, will likely retire - that leaves 3 question
marks on the DL. The selection of Brayton provides
immediate help in the rotation and
can be groomed as a potential starter. Starting FS Rod Woodson will retire next year - If Polamalu somehow slips this far - we don't think he'll make it to the 2nd round. |
